Greece - introduction

Steeped in history, blessed by beauty, soaked in sunshine.

The story of Europe begins between the many splendid islands of Greece and for any sun-seeker with more than a passing interest in history, there is no better holiday destination… No exaggeration!

Greece is a beautiful country from top to bottom. Of course, the scenery changes form north to south and from east to west. However, Greece is mostly mountainous and mostly coastal… This means tall, steep mountain sides dropping off into deep blue channels of sea. Which makes for a wonderful clashing coastline that has the ability to make you feel small, while shadowed by those mountains, and humble, whilst surveying the expanse of that sea.

Thousand Island Dressing, Sir?

1400 Islands and most towns lying on the coast make the country seem like an archipelago and the lifestyle of the Greeks is very maritime (5% of Greeks are directly employed in shipping). The country’s flag is a light sea blue and white which, on a sunny day, blends in with the predominant scenery - water.

And what ever you say about the sights of Greece, you cannot say that the Greeks are not ready for you. Greeks know how to serve! Some 75% of the population works in the service industry here, mostly geared towards serving us, the tourist. With 20 million of us heading there each year, there is certainly enough work to go around.

…And the Rest is History!

The western world has, pretty much, based the values of its civilization on the myths and surrounding philosophies of the Ancient Greeks. Even the name of Europe itself is taken from the demi-god Europa, a Phoenician princess who was seduced by the Greek God of gods, Zeus while he was in disguise as a white bull.

Where ever you go in Greece, there are constant reminders of ancient history.. whether actually passing the marble columns or simply reading the map. Greek history seems strangely familiar, even to those of us who have never been there before.

Yes, there are enough ancient sites to visit to really bore your kids to death… but you only really need to visit one or two and then carry on about your holiday simply imagining that you are a Greek Adonis, boating between the islands and listening out for the words of The Gods to guide your way.

The reasons for going to Greece are many.. no matter what brackets of traveller you fit into: From Mr. Deep Pockets five-star, all inclusive holiday through to Ms. Back Packer, on a shoe string, camping on the shoreline. Everybody will be sure to see some history, eat well and be able to find a beach to relax on.
