Not so many people head for the mainland of Greece on their holidays.. people prefer an island in the sun. But even if you arrive in Athens and head simply out of town, there is plenty of beauty to be had.

Attica

Athens is in the region of Attica.. and, being a center of Greek history you’ll find archaeology abound. For example: The temple of Poseidon, where the King of Athens ‘Aegeus’ threw himself into the sea – giving The Aegean Sea its name; Marathon, the place where the greeks famously beat the Persians in Battle and one of Atticas loveliest spots; and Ramnous with the temple of Nemesis.

Also visit Schinias beach, where the pine woods end almost where the sand begins.

Macedonia

Further north is almost a different country in its own right which would have its own capital as Thessaloniki, the most entertaining city in Greece. In this region there are the beautiful Prespa lakes and Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

The city of Kastoria on lake Orestiada is considered to be Greece's most beautiful cities and the Halkidiki peninsula, with its three prongs of Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos have everything from crowded tourist resorts to beautiful remote beaches.
